Our History

The Vision

As a young doctor in training, Dr. Martin witnessed firsthand the profound gap in access to healthcare—a gap that disproportionately affected those living below the poverty line.

Yet, it wasn’t only the uninsured who struggled; many patients with insurance faced insurmountable costs that rendered their coverage ineffective.

These experiences underscored the urgent need for accessible, affordable care for all, inspiring a commitment to bridge these disparities and bring healing to our community.

The Training

Dr. Martin’s direction has been profoundly shaped by a unique blend of experiences and educational milestones. Starting with a Master’s Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from Rockefeller College, followed by earning an MPA from Rockefeller College and an MSHSA from SUNY Institute of Technology, Dr. Martin developed a strong foundation in leadership and organizational strategy.

Building on this, medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and residency training in family medicine further enriched Dr. Martin's commitment to accessible healthcare. These pivotal moments converged to inspire his mission to address the gaps in care faced by the underserved, culminating in the establishment of Ogeechee Wound Healing.

The Need

Statesboro, Georgia, is a community with significant economic challenges. The poverty rate in Statesboro is approximately 37.7%, which is notably higher than both the state average of 12.7% and the national average of 12.6%. This means that nearly 1 in 3 residents live below the poverty line. Additionally, many families in the region earn less than the median income, with the typical household income in Statesboro being around $32,790, which is 51% lower than the national median of $67,500.

A substantial portion of households—about 69.7%—earn less than $50,000 annually, compared to the national rate of 39%. This disparity highlights the financial strain faced by many families, including those who may have insurance but struggle to afford healthcare costs due to limited income.

The Opportunity

Through our partnership with a local regional hospital, Ogeechee Wound Healing is uniquely positioned to bring advanced wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) services to those who need it most. This collaboration allows us to leverage medical expertise, resources, and infrastructure to ensure patients receive top-tier care, regardless of financial barriers.

The hospital's established presence in the community provides a strong foundation for expanding access to innovative treatments, bridging the gap for underserved populations and those struggling with high healthcare costs. By working together, we can create a network of healing that empowers individuals to regain their health, mobility, and quality of life while fostering a future where no one is left behind due to financial limitations.

This partnership represents more than just medical care—it’s a commitment to equitable healthcare, a mission to uplift the community, and a chance to change lives through accessible, compassionate healing.

The Plan

The Plan

Ogeechee Wound Healing is in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, which will enable us to expand our impact and provide essential wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) services to those in need. While we work through the legal and regulatory steps required for federal tax-exempt status, donations made at this stage are not yet tax-deductible. However, every contribution directly supports our mission and the groundwork needed to bring accessible, life-changing care to our community.

Our commitment to affordable care goes beyond financial assistance—we strive to grow and provide services at discounted rates wherever possible. We recognize that many individuals face barriers to care, not only due to lack of insurance but also because of high copays, deductibles, and coinsurance costs. Through financial assistance programs, we will work to cover these expenses for qualified patients, ensuring that financial hardship does not prevent anyone from receiving the treatment they need.

As we establish and expand, we will focus on:

  • Securing nonprofit status to enhance funding opportunities and sustainability.

  • Developing financial aid programs to assist those unable to afford wound care and HBOT.

  • Partnering with donors and organizations to subsidize costs and increase accessibility.

  • Ensuring transparency by providing updates on our progress, financial integrity, and services offered.

Through strategic growth and unwavering commitment, Ogeechee Wound Healing will become a vital healthcare resource for Statesboro and its surrounding communities—where healing is not a privilege but a right for all.

The Future

At Ogeechee Wound Healing, our future is one of hope, healing, and accessibility. Guided by our mission to provide compassionate wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), we envision a community where financial limitations never stand in the way of recovery.

As we grow and evolve, we will expand our services, strengthen partnerships, and enhance financial assistance programs to ensure treatment reaches everyone in need. Inspired by the message of healing and redemption in Isaiah 53, we remain committed to restoring lives—one patient at a time.

Through unwavering dedication and the support of our community, we will transform healthcare access in Statesboro and beyond, creating a future where quality care is not a privilege but a promise.
